Walking in Hampshire

Welcome to the North Hampshire Downs Ramblers Group Website. This website represents the local group of the Ramblers covering Basingstoke and the surrounding area. We hope that you will find much to interest you in these pages and look forward to meeting you on one of our walks.

Jonathan Woods - HCC Countryside Service Access Team Leader - has agreed to be the guest speaker at our Area AGM on Saturday 11 February  2017.

By February Jonathan will have been in post for one year as what is effectively the county's 'Rights of Way Manager' . He will talk to us for about 15-20 minutes about his first year; about what he now sees as his priorities, challenges etc etc., and then be prepared to take questions.

The beautiful and diverse Hampshire countryside offers many opportunities for interesting walks with its idyllic hidden villages, glorious open countryside and wooded hills. The distance we cover is usually between 4 and 7 miles (taking around 2 - 3 hours) and, occasionally, longer walks of around 10 miles, taking half a day. Most walks include a pub stop at the end, and for longer walks, a half-way refreshment stop, giving a chance to socialise and take a well-earned rest!

The programme includes a walk at most weekends (usually  Saturday) and a mid-week walk, usually on Tuesdays.  We walk primarily in North Hampshire, but we also venture further afield into Berkshire, West Sussex, and beyond. This picture is from  our very popular annual picnic ( see photo gallery for more pictures).

From time to time the group organises a longer walk with a B&B stopover, look out for the next one in our walking programme.  The group has just had a very successful trip to Minehead for 3 days in June, please see the newsletter for an interesting account of the few days .

Usually the start of the walks is within a 30 minute drive of Basingstoke.  For non-drivers transport can usually be arranged.  It is best to contact the walk leader in the first instance.

We also arrange social functions during the course of the year such as Christmas Lunch and Summer Picnics. If you are new to walking and want to give us a try, or already walk, you would be given a very welcome by the Group. We hope to see you soon!

If you are interested in joining the Ramblers we suggest you come along for a couple of walks with the group first to get a taster. Membership details are available from the Ramblers’ national website: www.ramblers.org.uk
